Build a Cohesive Brand that Strengthens Your Institution’s Impact

Strengthening your brand is one of the most effective ways to keep your campus robust and prepared for what’s next. Measuring brand equity enables you to understand and grow brand strength over time. Brand identity is one of the five aspects of brand equity: the face of your brand, and the scope of your online presence. For many campuses, it's also where the brand starts to fragment.
Brand identity is the set of tangible assets associated with your brand. In social intelligence, those are the channels you own, such as your institution’s social media accounts. Your identity can also include visual branding, voice, and physical branding and experiential aspects, but the channels are where audiences most often meet you online.
Why Brand Identity Matters
A strong identity creates perceived value beyond functional benefits, builds resilience during market and enrollment declines through customer loyalty, creates barriers to entry for competitors by occupying distinct market positions, and provides a clear purpose and direction to increase employee engagement. Improving brand identity builds brand resiliency and cohesion.
Social Intelligence and Expert Strategy Bring a Fragmented Identity into Focus
Many institutions have no single view of how their brand shows up across the channels they own. Different teams publish for different purposes, and no one sees the whole picture. Social intelligence brings those channels into view together, so you can see your identity as audiences experience it, no matter who is posting on your behalf.
The data is only the start. Social intelligence shows how much conversation each part of your presence generates, how that compares with similar institutions, which themes you rely on in your storytelling, and where your brand is consistent and where it isn't. Our analysts and strategists then interpret what the patterns mean: which inconsistencies are getting in the way of awareness, which channels carry the brand, and what to align first.
That interpretation is what turns a finding into a decision. Working sessions with your marketing and enrollment teams, and written recommendations your leaders can act on, help campuses move from “we have an inconsistent brand” to a plan for fixing it.
Identity Insights Drive Action
Strengthen Brand Cohesion to Drive Messaging Success
Brand identity insights for a public university showed that its accounts weren't balanced. Athletics accounts made up about 25% of the total accounts but about 75% of its branded conversation volume. That outsized share overshadowed messaging from institutional accounts. Inconsistent naming conventions between institutional and athletics accounts also made it harder for audiences to find the accounts they were looking for.
The university used the findings to set consistent naming conventions and imagery, and to prioritize its core and athletics accounts for high-level messaging while amplifying relevant messages from institutional accounts. The result is a network of accounts that serves different interests and specialties while helping audiences navigate the university's online ecosystem.
The numbers made the imbalance visible. Expert interpretation helps a team decide what the imbalance means for the brand and which changes to make first.
Brand Equity Framework
Understanding your identity prepares you to examine the rest of your brand equity and build a brand strategy aligned with your future vision.
