Beyond Your Campus: Bridging the STEM Degree Gap
According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES), the number of undergraduate STEM degrees conferred by postsecondary institutions increased by 16% between the 2016-17 and 2020-21 academic years.
Despite the growing interest in STEM majors, there are stark differences in participation across racial groups. Participation is highest for students who identify as White (58%), Asian/Pacific Islander (15%) and Hispanic (14%). Shares are lowest for students who identify as Black (8%), Two or more races (5%) and American Indian/ Alaska Native (less than 1%).
